Home Hygrometer to Prevent Mold

We are often asked how to prevent mold in the home and using a home hygrometer is a simple way to help homeowners keep their homes mold-free. Here we’ll explain what a hygrometer is, how it can help you prevent mold in your home, and tell you which model we think is the best hygrometer for that purpose.

How Does a Hygrometer Prevent Mold?

A hygrometer is an instrument that measures the relative humidity, or the amount of moisture, in the air. Mold usually grows in places with high relative humidity, above 50 percent. If you use a hygrometer to monitor the relative humidity in your home, you can take steps to reduce the amount of moisture in the air if it gets too high, thereby making it more difficult for mold to grow. The hygrometer itself doesn’t actually stop mold from growing in your home, but it provides an early warning system so you can take further steps to prevent mold when the house humidity level is too high.

The easiest way to reduce the amount of moisture in the air is to install a dehumidifier, an appliance that draws moisture out of the air. They are reasonably priced, available at most home goods stores, and easy to install and use.

Do You Need a Home Hygrometer?

We think you definitely need a hygrometer if:

  • You’ve had a household mold problem in the past (even if you haven’t ever had a mold problem, though, that’s no guarantee you won’t develop one in the future).
  • You live in a particularly humid geographical area, like the southeastern United States (note that the relative humidity in your home, or in some areas of your home, can be high even if the humidity outdoors is not high, though).
  • You have valuable wooden furniture or musical instruments in your home (not only can furnishings be damaged by mold, which is likely to grow if your home is too humid, but wooden furniture and musical instruments can become warped and damaged if the relative humidity is too low).
  • You, or members of your family, have health problems that get worse when relative humidity is high, like asthma or other breathing problems.
  • You, or members of your family, have health problems that can be made worse by mold, like respiratory disorders, immune system disorders, or a mold allergy.

Anyone can benefit from having a hygrometer, though. They are affordable and easy to install and use and can save you a lot of money by preventing mold and mold-related health problems down the road. There’s really no reason not to get one for your home.

The Best Hygrometer for Preventing Mold in the Home

The best hygrometer we’ve found is the Ambient Weather model home hygrometer. We like it because it’s easy to install and use, because it’s highly accurate, and because it’s reasonably priced. We also like it because it contains a thermometer as well as a hygrometer.

Our favorite thing about the Ambient Weather hygrometer, though, is the fact that it comes with two sensors, allowing you to monitor the relative humidity in two separate parts of the home from one console. You can purchase up to seven additional sensors, which would allow you to easily monitor the relative humidity throughout the home, all from one console. This is important because the relative humidity can vary significantly from one part of the home to another. For instance, bathrooms and basements are often much more humid than living rooms or upstairs bedrooms.
